About REcheck

Ever binned a perfectly good item simply because it was too hard to find someone who could use it? You're not alone.

Those days are over. REcheck is your go-to directory for all the REs: REuse, REpair, REnt, REpurpose, REcycle (and more). With just a quick “REcheck before you chuck,” you’ll find sustainable, local solutions to keep your items in use, and out of landfill.

Whether you’ve outgrown it, broken it, emptied it, or just don’t need it anymore, REcheck helps you find the right option for your stuff, one that suits your timeline, values, and environmental ethos.

Our goal? To become the site you think of every single time something is heading toward the bin. Not so fun fact: Greater Sydney’s landfill space is expected to run out by 2030 unless urgent action is taken (EPA NSW). That’s not far off.

From bread tags to bed sheets, pool toys to pencils, fashion to furniture, tools to timber, and everything in between; almost anything can have another life in the right hands.

The gift of time

Even when we care deeply about the planet, it’s often just too hard to figure out what to do with our stuff. That’s why we built REcheck.

We’ve done the digging, the Googling, the phone calls, the back-and-forths, to find your options for keeping things in circulation, so you don’t have to.

The privilege of choice

In just a few clicks, REcheck gives you real, meaningful choices for your item's next life. Take your smartphone, for example. You could send it to:

  • a social enterprise that refurbishes it for people in need
  • a charity supporting refugees
  • a company that sends phones overseas
  • a recycler that safely extracts precious metals.

When these options are this easy to access, how could you choose landfill?

The power of connection

For REcheck to work, we need both givers and takers keeping items in motion.

If you’re a giver (someone with things to rehome) REcheck is your best friend when you're short on time and staring at a pile of stuff. Think big life events like merging households, moving, clearing an estate, or the classic seasonal clearout after a wardrobe shift, new hobby, or outgrown gear.

If you’re a taker (someone who says, “yes please, I’ll use that”) REcheck is for you too. Maybe you’re:

  • a school P&C reusing plastic cups for events
  • an artist looking for doll parts
  • a charity supporting people doing it tough.

REcheck is basically a matchmaking service, connecting people with excess to those who need access.

What’s the plan?

We’ve launched in Sydney, but with your help we will cover Australia.

If you’re a business, organisation, group or service that belongs in this directory, this is your invitation. List yourself now, it’s free. Be an early adopter, get ahead of the curve, and bring your friends.

We’ve started small, but our to-do list is long (and exciting). Got an idea? We’d love to hear it.

Whose big idea?

Hi, I’m Leah Thurecht – and REcheck is my big idea.

After five years working at Reverse Garbage, Australia’s largest creative reuse centre, I saw just how many people were desperate to avoid landfill but didn’t know where to turn. We could accept a lot of stuff — but not everything — and the rest? People were left to trawl the internet in search of answers. It was frustrating. And it stuck with me.

For years, I had the same note scribbled on my to-do list: Make a list of where to take things. But like many resource-poor charities, we never had the time or capacity to make it happen.

So I decided to do it myself. That’s how REcheck was born.

I don’t have all the answers (yet), but I believe that with help from the passionate, resourceful community around us, we can build something powerful together.

Join me on the journey.
